Imagine a World Without Traffic Signs

Picture this: You’re driving through the streets of Dallas, but something feels off. There are no traffic signs in sight—no road signs to guide your way, no street signs to tell you where you are, and no road traffic symbols to indicate what’s ahead.

It’s chaos, right?

Thankfully, this is just a thought experiment, but it highlights how vital traffic signs are to keeping our roads safe and orderly.

At Elevated Exposure Signs & Graphics, we understand the importance of clear, well-placed traffic signs for businesses and municipalities alike. Let’s dive into why these signs are essential and how we can help you navigate the world of road warning signs and regulatory signs.

Dallas Regulations About Traffic Signs

Navigating the rules and regulations for traffic signs in Dallas is crucial for ensuring compliance and safety. Here’s what you need to know about the Dallas Standards in Traffic Signs:

  • Existing signs on public construction sites in Dallas are city property and must be protected by the contractor throughout the project.
  • All ground-mounted and overhead signs must be made from ANSI Standard BQ1528 aluminum blanks, specifically 5052-H38 aluminum (ASTM B-209) with a thickness of 0.080 inches, except for overhead street name blades, which are 0.100 inches thick.
  • Holes should be 3/8 inch in diameter, drilled or punched cleanly.
  • Sign face materials must meet ASTM-4956 Type XI retroreflective sheeting standards.
  • Street name signs should be bolted with ¼” x 1” bolts and nuts and sign blank corners must be rounded as specified.
  • Signs must be etched and degreased before applying legends, and all signage must conform to the latest City of Dallas standards.
  • A full-length red retroreflective strip must be applied to stop signposts.

Different Kinds of Traffic Signs

Traffic signs come in all shapes and sizes, each serving a unique purpose. Here’s a quick rundown of the most common types:

  • Regulatory Signs: These include stop signs, yield signs, speed limit signs, and other signs that enforce traffic laws and rules.
  • Warning Signs: Road warning signs like the no passing zone sign alert drivers to potential hazards or changes in road conditions.
  • Guide Signs: Street signs and directional signs help drivers navigate by providing information on routes, distances, and points of interest.
  • Construction Signs: Temporary signs that warn of construction zones, detours, and other roadwork.
  • School Zone Signs: These signs alert drivers to areas where children may be crossing or playing, ensuring they slow down and drive cautiously.
